I look forward to the next novel in the Berlin Bookmobile series. A Perfect Amish Romance has secrets, hope, faith, trust issues, and love. There are good life lessons in this charming Amish tale especially regarding perfection. It provides more than a place to get books. I enjoyed seeing how the bookmobile and Sarah Ann served the community. The Coblentz family is lively and amusing. Tiny Coblentz has been friends with Joel, but she now wants a different relationship. It is putting a strain on her, and Kayla has no life of her own. Kayla has had to take over things previously handled by her mother and her father. Her father has been depressed since her death. Aaron wants to get his GED so he can get a promotion. Once I got into the story (able to keep the people straight), I really enjoyed this story. It can, though, be confusing in the beginning trying to keep the various characters and their stories straight. There are several storylines going on which keeps the book interesting. A Perfect Amish Romance is a sweet and amusing story. As they spend time together studying, their thoughts turn from vocabulary to romance. Sarah Ann arranged for Kayla Kaufman to tutor Aaron. Aaron wants to take the GED and needs a tutor. Over the last year, Sarah Ann has become more than a librarian to the people who visit the bookmobile. Sarah Ann Miller takes out the bookmobile to the stops within her area. A Perfect Amish Romance by Shelley Shepard Gray is the debut of the Berlin Bookmobile series.

Writing in The Guardian, Euan Ferguson said: "It was a mess: ill-plotted, playing bits for laughs or for horror without ever achieving either." Anita Singh of The Daily Telegraph gave the show 2 out of 5 stars, writing: "All of the characters' behavior felt a little weird, and it was not clear if that was by accident or design. Based on the knowledge that ones love is not returned. It is much more-how shall I say-fundamental than that.
But I've always thought that poetry was meant to be savored a little at a time. He does tend to get repetitive after a while, so I certainly wasn't able to read this in one sitting. I'm just going to say it: Walt Whitman was the King of List Poems. Reading that one, plus Drum-Taps and Sequel to Drum-Taps (small poetry collections written during the Civil War and folded into later editions of Leaves of Grass), would have given me the background I needed for Voices in the Dead House, rather than trying to read the entire, huge final edition. Given that the book that inspired me to read Leaves of Grass was set in December 1862 and January 1863, what I *should* have read was the 1860-61 edition, the third of many, as Whitman constantly added, deleted, and edited poems from the original 1855 edition. More enjoyable for me were shorter poems like " When I Heard the Learn'd Astronomer," “ Ethiopia Saluting the Colors,” and " O Captain! My Captain!" It sometimes seemed like he was simply stringing together bunches of proper nouns or synonyms, rather than using imagery. Most of Walt Whitman's free verse poems are way too long, in my opinion. I tried to read this book of poetry because it was mentioned so frequently in Voices in the Dead House, a book I read and reviewed for the LibraryThing Early Reviewers program. My family, immediate and extended, for encouraging me to love books, and for supporting my enthusiasm for things that they don't entirely understand. For cheerleading and encouragement when I thought I’d give up, thank you immensely to Mayka, Ashton, Miko, Gane, and Erin. To the friends who talked through this book when it was a few lines in a Slack chat and a comment on who had great collarbones: Al, Luce, Sus, Marissa, Rachel, Rach, and Lil. I’d be lost without her, and she’ll always be in that first clutch of three to share good news with. My bezzer, who’s been there from the very start and kept me honest and whole for longer than anyone should have to. The carrot to my pea, if I thanked for her all the ways she’s helped me or made me a better person, I’d need a whole other book. First among them is my best friend, my sister, my person: Lande. There are any number of people without whom I wouldn’t be here, and wouldn’t be doing this. Who remains the best possible answer to the most important question I’ve ever asked. |
